Unconventional Sounds

Whenever I see a remix of a relatively new and mainstream track I always expect to hear what 99% of them are: an unaltered vocal stem with the instrumentals replaced by simple bass synths in the original chord progressions. It’s a formula that keeps enough people intereseted for a listen or two and creates new yet familiar.

And while I’m oversimplifying things, it’s always so refreshing when I come across producers who are able to put an unconventional spin on familar sounds and make it sound not just different, but also equally or more listenable than the original.
The first producer that I heard who was consistently doing something along these lines was MMMatthias (you can dl all his remixes on his Myspace)

Bloc Party – Signs (MMMathias Remix)

The 2 newest producers who exemplify this are up and comers Coucheron (Asker, Norway) and Kill Them With Colour (Victoria, Canada).

Kill Them With Color recently put out a remix of Dan Black and Kid Cudi’s Symphonies that has been destroyed Hypem despite it’s sort of initial awkwardness. It takes a bit of time to wrap one’s mind around the reworked rhythms when you’re listening to it. Same goes for Coucheron’s beautifully chopped up and reorganized remix of Phoenix’s 1901.

Both of these guys appear to be pretty new to the game and full of potential and talent. Coucheron is just a young pup at 16 years old so expect to hear more from him again as he’s goin places. Here’s some more proof that these guys have talent.

I believe this is the first of what looks like is gonna be a string of remixes of NERD’s Hypnotize U, which was originally produced by Daft Punk. Nero never fails to deliver but I personally am more excited for the full release of Alex Metric’s version of the track.
