‘And here he is, the one the only; MOTOR in all his Dim Mak glory!’

What’s the meaning behind the name MOTOR?

The music we were making sounded like an engine. It was relentless and pulsing like a machine. The name perfectly described the music. We purposely started MOTOR as a reaction against all the crappy techno (and rock) music at the time. We wanted to make a bold statement. Electronic music could have the energy of punk rock, without all the crappy guitar solos and poor drumming.

Tell us a bit about yourselves? What do you guys do when you’re not Producing?

Drinking wine, watching films, reading books on planes. Most of my time is spent on airplanes and hotel rooms. Sometimes I walk around the city (NYC) with a Dictaphone and record ideas for songs.

Could you tell our readers a bit about your musical roots? How and when did you know you wanted to produce electro?

I was givin a little casio synthesizer when I was a kid. I’ve always had a thing for synths. I worked with Prince at his studios in Minneapolis and learned most of my tricks from that experience. My first band was called Haloblack. Sounded like NIN, Ministry, Meat Beat Manifesto. Industrial…It wasn’t until I moved to London England that I finally got rid of the guitars and focused on my passion for pure electronic music. Just before MOTOR, Mr No and I started a band called XLOVER. We signed to Gigolo Records during the height of the electroclash revival. Those were amazing times, and eventually our rock influences subconsciously took our music to edgier pastures.

How long have you been producing for?

About 20 years.

Are there any producers at the moment you think we should be keeping our eyes on?

Gesaffelstein, Art Department, Tommy Four Seven

Your top three favourite bangers at moment, what are they?

  • MOTOR’s Death Rave
  • Slam- Hot Knives
  • Terence Fixmer- Machine- Speedy J remix

In 10words or less how would you describe yourself?

Difficult

Oh shit! Your Studio is on fire! You only have time to save one piece of gear! What is it?

  • Arp2600
  • synthesizer

Would you say any other artists have had a strong influence on your work?

DAF, Nitzer Ebb, Prince, Beethoven, Aphex Twin,  Mr Oizo, Acid House..

Tell us about your childhood crushes and your worldwide fame; have you managed to swing any of those girls in primary school who never spoke to you?

Yes, they all follow me on facebook now. Usually they are married to some fat asshole and have about 6 kids and are frustrated with their lives.

If the world really ends in 2012, what do you think you will be known for, and if you somehow managed to survive, how do you think the rest of your life would play out?

Making music that annoys dogs. Setting the foundation for Justice, Boys Noize and others to build on.

If life goes on past 2012, I will keep making noise that annoys most people, but causes absolute euphoria for about 1% of the population.

How many producers does it take to change a light bulb and why?

Countless. They are all college drop outs and suffer from tinnitus.

What has been your most memorable show you have played, and why?

Opening for Depeche Mode at San Siro Stadium in Milan. 60,000 people.

When will we be seeing you in Australia?

May 12-23. This being my first time, I am really looking forward to it. I hope there’s more to OZ than Fosters Lager and Surfing.

Thanks MOTOR, we send our Love from Australia, Trashbags.
