What’s the meaning behind the name Kent Rockafeller?
It’s a name that a New York buddy of mine came up with that we thought was funny for some reason. Something about “Kent” juxtaposed to “Rockafeller” is just great. We’d call each other Kent all the time. Very pronounced “K” when spoken out loud.
Tell us a bit about yourself, childhood memories?
I actually grew up in North Carolina running around in the woods with horses and dogs. Hunting, redneck shit basically. And somehow found my way to NYC.
Could you tell our readers a bit about your musical roots? How and when did you know you wanted to produce electro?
I started playing cello when I was 6. Was very serious classical performer for a long time. Found my way to NYC after high school and the cello morphed from classical, to jazz (didn’t stick) and then to a crazy band in queens that I also played bass in. Once every members partying habits took that band down, next was a heavy electro and performance art band. This one morphed into a production company in which myself and the other writer in the band started composing for film and producing tracks on the side. Rocked that for several years, and finally found myself doing exactly what I wanted to be doing all along… Producing electronic music full time. And here we are.
How long have you been producing for?
Strictly producing and strictly in the dance, electronic world probably 3 years? Composing for many.
Are there any producers at the moment you think we should be keeping our eyes on?
I’m starting to get heavily into the LA chill, electro thing that is happening now. I will never lose my love for the dirty, hard electro that I know you guys are huge fans of, but something about the style they’re working in is hitting me right at the moment. That was what kinda influenced the Barretso Remix – I wanted to go a little more chill, sexy. Couple names – Schlohmo, D33J, alpha pup records, Munchi. Big fan of Dillon Francis at the moment as well.
Tell us about the Barretso Remix Competition, how did you hear about this?
The blog! Been a fan for a sec.
How long did you spend on your remix?
Hmmm. This was actually my first “fully performed/recorded in Ableton Live” joint to be honest (I’m a pro tools nerd). And the parts came together pretty quickly. When that happens I can get through the ideas in a day. I spent more time on tweaking the sounds in the studio though afterwards, compression etc. And I tried to give myself time to step away and come back. In total maybe 3 days? But spread over a couple weeks.
How did you feel the competition went in the contest, any other produces remixes you admire?
I was really impressed overall with many of the top folks. The styles, the production value, people really pushed to be creative which I thought was really impressive and great to be a part of.
Your top three favourite bangers at moment, what are they?
embody, can’t get the mr oizo remix of shoes (even though its a bit old) out of my spin cycle, and Dillon Francis is not missing much at the moment.
In 10 words or less how would you describe yourself?
Sexy
Oh shit! Your Studio is on fire! You only have time to save one piece of gear! What is it?
My Cello. That bitch has been in between my legs for a long time.
Would you say any other artists have had a strong influence on your work?
I was a huge IDM fan for a long time while I was composing, Boards of Canada, those types. I sometimes think that time in my life has really influenced the way I produce now.
How did you hear about Tuff Em Up Records, and Trashbags!
Stumbled on to the blog looking for new places to find music.
Tell us about your childhood crushes and your worldwide fame; have you managed to swing any of those girls in primary school who never spoke to you?
I broke their hearts long ago. Two times would just be cruel.
If you had to duel it out in the 1400’s what would be your weapon of choice?
Those balls with spikes you swing around to fuck people up. Were they around then?
If the world really ends in 2012, what do you think you will be known for, and if you somehow managed to survive, how do you think the rest of your life would play out?
My world famous, illegitimate children I don’t know about yet. If I survived you’d find me somewhere in Mexico on the beach, living off the cash I mooched off of said children.
How many producers does it take to change a light bulb and why?
One but only if he has his engineer with him.
What has been your most memorable show you have played, and why?
I played CBGB’s before it closed… Thats pretty cool no?
When will we be seeing you in Australia?
As soon as you make me rich.
Thanks KentRockafeller, we send our Love from Australia, Trashbags.
