‘Woooahh Boris Dlugosch!!!!

Tell us a bit about yourself, childhood memories?

I was the kid that ran around the house collecting things like boxes, cans, glasses and stuff to build my homemade ‘drum kit’ and just went nuts playing it. My best birthday ever was when I became 9 and I got my first REAL drumkit. When I was a teenager I had my first band at school playing rock music and heavy metal.

Could you tell our readers a bit about your musical roots? How and when did you know you wanted to produce electronic music?

Well I was listening to music back to as long as I can remember. First my sisters record collection with late 60ies and 70ies stuff. The Beatles, Status Quo, Blondie, ELO and stuff. Then I started buying records myself. It was always a mixture of classic Pop/electronic and more recent Dance music as the record shop closest to my house was selling used as well as new records. A mixture of disco twelve inches and rock and pop albums was what I went for the most. I was addicted to the 12” format!!

When I was 17 at school we had some practice-weeks where we would look for a ‘job’ for ourselves for a couple of weeks to see how REAL ‘JOB’ LIFE would be. I got lucky and got this job at a music production studio. I didn’t really like it though as I was more of a ‘tea boy’ than a real producer.

But I guess this was kind of the beginning…

How long have you been producing for?

I started in the early nineties. 1993!

Are there any producers at the moment you think we should be keeping our eyes on?

I m a big fan of HEY TODAY! From Hamburg, TWR72 from Holland are great, too. MUMBAI SCIENCE from Belgium and also GESAFFELSTEIN from France are really great… not really ‘NEW’ is JAN DRIVER but his album coming out soon is amazing! And SIRIUSMO is one of my favourites still! DJEDJOTRONIC is a very very talented young producer.

What does it feel like hearing your songs being played by other DJ’s?

Oh that’s great of course! Especially when its people you look up to yourself. I was so happy when EROL ALKAN played ‘Bangkok’ as opener of his last Australian tour at each show. He later licensed the track to his label PHANTASY.

But even better is playing your music yourself and see the crowd go mental!

Your top three favourite songs at moment, what are they?

Well there’s sooooo many great tracks out now its hard to decide….. maybe:

  • 1. JAN DRIVER – Raveyard/Dozer
  • 2. ALEX GOPHER – Virages
  • 3. MUMBAI SCIENCE – Lotus

In 10 words or less how would you describe yourself?

Phew…. Dunno.

What Does your Studio Look like, what sort of equipment are you running?

At the moment my studio consists more or less only of a big 27” iMac. I do have some vintage gear of course … nothing so extraordinaire though. I like oberheim stuff. Matrix 1000 and Xpander. Just rediscovered my NORD RACK, not really vintage but early nineties. I love my MOOG VOYAGER but at the end of the day this doesn’t really matter. Its either a good idea or not what makes a good track!

Oh shit! Your Studio is on fire! You only have time to save one piece of gear! What is it?

That’s tough! My record collection took the most time and money to complete but I can’t carry all those records at once…. Maybe the 303 in one hand and the MOOG in the other, if that’s OK?

Would you say any other artists have had a strong influence on your work?

Of course!! There were sooo many. I think I sucked in every single record I listened to in my early ages and up until now. I listened to a lot of BEATLES when I was a Teen, as well as a lot of DISCO and original ELECTRO. Italo Disco.

Maybe Giorgio Moroder. ‘THE CHASE’ was really one of the most influential tracks to me. I was maybe 15 going from Hamburg to Paris by train at night on a school exchange. Listening to ‘THE CHASE’ on my Walkman and totally flying away eyes closed. That was my first ever trip on electronic music, I guess.

Tell us about your childhood crushes and your worldwide fame; have you managed to swing any of those girls in primary school who never spoke to you?

Ha ha, that’s a good one! well to be honest, and I know this sounds kind of snotty… I never had problems finding a girlfriend.

If you had to duel it out in the 1400’s what would be your weapon of choice?

Hmm.. I m a pacifist. I would have probably not duelled it out at all….

If the world really ends in 2012, what do you think you will be known for, and if you somehow managed to survive, how do you think the rest of your life would play out?

Well I hope some of the music I wrote/produced will stay as well as some outstanding club/partynights I had with my crowd.

How many producers does it take to change a light bulb and why?

What?

What has been your most memorable show you have played, and why?

Another tuff one… hmm…. My first ever ‘professional’ dj gig perhaps. DJing at a club in hamburg called THE FRONT and having to deal with those THORENS TD524 DirectDrive Turntables. You had to turn a switch to activate the pitch (of +/- 25%) which I found out maybe at my third or fourth time DJing there. Shortly before giving up as Beatmatching seemed impossible to perform on these decks. Also my first time DJing at Soundfactory Bar in NYC or my first time at SPACE , Ibiza, first time at MINISTRY OF SOUND in London… All great memories!

When will we be seeing you in Australia?

I hope very soon!! I loved it very much over there. I think TRASHBAGS and my agent are talking already… hopefully coming winter!

Thanks Boris Dlugosch, we send our Love from Australia, Trashbags.
